Traveling to the UK, would like suggestions

Ron Collins

Curiously Confused
My Wife, 3yr old son and I are traveling to the UK soon and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on things to see. We have family in Colchester, Nottingham, and Grimsby.

I have see then obvious stuff, Warwick Castle, Stonehenge, Bath, Nottingham Castle (although it looks more like a big house), Cambridge, and host of burial mounds, stone structures and about ten thousand cathedrals. Also, we have done most of the more interesting things in London.

Is there anything else someone would suggest we see?

Sure. Get down to Portsmouth and tour HMS Victory. There are tons of things to do on the docks there as well. If you happen to be near Hartlespool, a minor version is HMS Tricomolee, the last frigate ala Aubrey's HMS Surprise. As far as big houses, if you haven't seen Longleat, owned by the Marquess of Bath, including the 'private tour' of his art, it's well worthwhile. The Marquess is a self-styled 'hippy' who is famous for his 72 'wifelets,' each of whom he has painted.

You should visit Liverpool. Besides the obvious Beatles stuff, you could visit Anfield, which is the ground Liverpool Football Club play at. I have witnessed many true miracles there.

Also, it is only a short to medium drive to North Wales from Liverpool. If you like stone circles, I visited Moel Ty Uchaf once, which was awesome.

Co-incidentally, Moel Ty Uchaf is close to an alleged crash site, which dates back to 1974.

If you're able, try to see York -- it's like stepping back in time. I don't think it's all that far from Colchester.

York is very nice and they also have some ghost tours there, I believe more than one, so try for the 'original.' There are two museums there, one a modern history museum that has artifacts from the early twentieth century that may bring back memories. (They did for me, but I'm 60) and also an archaeological museum that is very nice.

I went to York during our last trip. It really was cool. I didn't get to see it all so it would be a good spot. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Hi Ron,

Saw your post first thing this morning and have been giving it thought all day. Sorry if these are all over the map but at least some of them might interest you.

Try and get a ride on a narrowboat here through the tunnel, it's two miles long.

My favourite sea side town. You'll love this little place, a real treasure, and you must sample their famous Adnams beers.

If you are at all interested in Roman Britain.

I know you would like this place.

And probably this one.

Stuff in London, could go on and on.

How about Blenheim Palace, with that Churchill connection, and landscaping by Capability Brown. Also the surrounding countryside and towns like Upper and Lower Slauhter are nice.

If you're going to York then whilst in that area, you might like to visit here,

I'd look to buy a home there. You're from the States correct? If not, nevermind:)

Thanks a bunch for these. There are some must see's here. I'll let you know which ones we are planning on.

Your were right about the WWII flight museum and the tank museum (these will definately make the list). I went to a place called "Secret Bunker" not far from Colchester. That was really interesting. I went to look for the link and found that it has been closed since 2002. Too bad, thats about when I was there. Anyway, here is the link. It was a cool place to visit. http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/mistley.htm
