Despite all the packaging for TV, we forget they were talented singers and musicians. Peter Tork played multiple instruments quite well.

Here's a live concert without Mike Nesmith, but you can see how they really sounded.

 
The Monkees were actually quite a good musical band, they did try to go the way of the Beatles and Experiment with their music but the producers and record companies did not want them to but I always felt they were unfairly underrated.
