NASA May Have Stumbled on Warp Drive

"Meanwhile, in the lab, NASA and other space programs were working on prototypes of the EmDrive or RF resonant cavity thruster invented by British aerospace engineer Roger J. Shawyer. This propulsion device uses a magnetron to produce microwaves for thrust, has no moving parts and needs no reaction mass for fuel. In 2014, Johnson Space Center claimed to have developed its own low-power EmDrive.

A prototype of an EmDrive

Which brings us to today’s warp field buzz. Posts on NASASpaceFlight.com, a website devoted to the engineering side of space news, say that NASA has a tool to measure variances in the path-time of light. When lasers were fired through the EmDrive’s resonance chamber, it measured significant variances and, more importantly, found that some of the beams appeared to travel faster than the speed of light. If that’s true, it would mean that the EmDrive is producing a warp field or bubble. Here’s a comment from a space forum following the tests."

If any of this is even remotely true we'll be faster than fairies!:)

From UfoUpdates, Marc DanAntonio

"Marc DantonioErika I agree with you ... It seems there is a dearth of news about this drive .. But the concept isnt new incidentally... The Alcubierre Drive concept has been around since 1994 when Miguel Alcubierre derived the possibility. The problem THEN was that the amount of energy required to create a 'warp bubble' as outlined by Miguel (and named in deference to Gene Roddenberry) was the equivalent of converting the entire mass of the planet Jupiter to energy. So in other words it was theoretical but laughably impractical in the remotest sense at the time. But, now with a new ship design and especially a new 'ring' around the ship that has a different aspect ratio, it was found that the energy requirements have DROPPED by astronomical amounts, in fact by 2.6x10^24 Kilograms! This puts the mass to energy ratio now more at the need to convert something the size of the Voyager spacecraft to energy (722kg). So With THAT said, NASA has undertaken study of the Alcubierre drive concept.
Another showstopper early on (which changes with changes in ship design) was that as the Alcubierre drive equipped ship moves through space it accumulates energy/mass that moves with it. As the ship comes out of the warp bubble a massive energy burst is theorized to occur which would destroy the ship and possibly any planet the ship was approaching. So it seemed on paper anyway to be a losing prospect on several fronts. But the alteration of the ring that would generate the warp bubble has changed things to the point where it is still highly impractical NOW but a forseeable future now exists where it might actually work.
The media is unfortunately full of people who are pretty 'science-free' so they dont have any concept of the importance of such discovery nor interest in reporting it since they actually have to RESEARCH the data before daring to talk about it. That means work and the media is all about quick hits an ratings. Even if it means FABRICATING the news rather than REPORTING the news."

"Marc DantonioNo see thats the thing... The warp bubble protects not just YOU inside the bubble but the Universe OUTSIDE the bubble from any effects FROM the bubble... did that come across right? haha... So you would never see such a ship utilizing this technique BUT there are consequences of traveling long distances in this bubble which would be prone to accumulation of other energy and particles that would likely cause a massive supernova-plus explosion on the flip side when the ship shuts down the bubble. But this is one of those wrinkles that have to be dealt with for this to work. I think it can work..."

He's giving a good layman's description for us half ass sciency folk about the concept they are exploring. Can't help but notice that the entry and exit of such a transport sounds an awful lot like what we see with UFO's and their current patterns in our skies.

Im excited, ive long held the view, and its just my gut feeling that FTL is simply a matter of technological ability. No more impossible than flight .

And i think the principle behind this feat will once its developed turn out to be a pretty simple thing, as simple an exploit of the natural environment as the sail is to ships

I didn't read yet when they expect to conduct this test again? Are they waiting for more funding or just setting it up to do again?

From what i can see its yet to be peer reviewed but this is interesting

Last year, Pennsylvania-based scientist Guido Fetta and his team at Nasa Eagleworks published a paper that demonstrates that a similar engine works on the same principles.

Researchers previously believed this wouldn't work in the vacuum of space, but Nasa has allegedly shown otherwise.

Physics says particles in the quantum vacuum cannot be ionised, so therefore you cannot push against it. But Nasa's latest test is claimed to have shown otherwise.
'Nasa has successfully tested their EmDrive in a hard vacuum – the first time any organisation has reported such a successful test,' the researchers wrote.

The implications for this could be huge. For instance, current satellites could be half the size they are today without the need to carry fuel.

And it seems the x37b is testing a similar device

The X-37B will be taking part in a 'Hall thruster electric propulsion test' on May 20, launching on United Launch Alliance's Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral.
Hall thrusters use electricity to ionize and propel xenon gas, setting them apart from conventional chemical engines. This results in a 'whisper quiet' thruster which uses only a fraction of the fuel and weight that current methods do.

And they also make a point ive made over and over again here when people say its impossible

Nasa's official site says that: 'There are many 'absurd' theories that have become reality over the years of scientific research.

Indeed they said the same thing about heavier than air flight, heart transplants and high speed rail

Mike you have no idea how much I am about this as well.
My personal thoughts about this is that it is only a matter of time until some one cracks it.

The microwave drive is not the same as the Alcubierre Drive, however, it may turn out to have the same effect, warping space-time. The Microwave sends the output of a magnetron or other microwave generator into a asymmetrical closed wave guide. It generates a tiny amount of thrust with no mass being ejected. How does it do this? It violates totally the conservation of momentum, yet it works. This much has been known for several years. The amount of thrust it produces isn't sufficient to accelerate a spaceship to any significant speed, but it is sufficient for station keeping of satellites and will allow satellites to function much longer because what currently limits a satellites lifetime is propellant for station keeping, and this eliminates the need for this propellant. However, it's the anomalies where new discoveries are made, and so it seems with this device, because the discovery that the device alters the speed of light within it suggests it is warping space time. If we can understand how it does this then perhaps from there we can make a practical warp drive that can accelerate space craft to greater than speed of light (because the craft is at sub-light speeds within the warp field, but space-time itself is being compressed in front of the craft and expanded behind, allowing it to travel effectively faster than light, without violating known laws of physics), but this device is already violating known laws of physics which indicates what we thought were known laws of physics have exceptions. How Einsteinian laws of general and special relativity expanded on Newtonian physics, well now we may be on the verge of expanding on relativity, an expansion that may open up the universe to us. Throughout man's history we've made very basic discoveries like fire, electricity, electro-magnetism, that we've ultimately expanded and built on, and I think this discovery ultimately will have even greater implications. I believe ultimately it will be the answer to faster than light travel, communications, the artificial manipulation of gravity, and possibly even time travel. Goodbye brave new world and hello brave new universe.
