Dude, are we landing on a quacking comet?

pong

Groupthink Must Die
There is a world of difference as far as picture clarity between the first pics (July 14) and the second one in less than one month and yet physical contact is not due for three more months yet, am I missing something as far as perspective ?

Perhaps this thread title should be altered to read "Dude, are we landing on a quacking, stinky comet ?

Rosetta Smells Comet And It's Bad - Business Insider

"...The latest report is the scent with which this comet is permeating space. If all comets smell like this one, then the solar system is a very stinky place!

Mix together the bitter smell of almonds, the sour odor of rotten eggs, the dank aroma of horse stable, the pungent aroma of formaldehyde, the biting scent of alcohol all together and voila: comet perfume..."

There is something very spooky - eerie - about the photos from the lander imo.

Philae Sends Back First Images, But Problems Mean Its Mission Could Soon Be Over

TEXT: "When we look at a picture of a comet, we’re used to seeing a bright, ghost-like streak across the sky. Now, for the first time ever, our eyes are treated to a close-up view, taken from the surface of the infamous “rubber duck” comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

"Since the momentous touchdown on Wednesday, the ESA’s Philae lander has sent back two snaps of the cosmic snowball, both of which were taken by the Comet Infrared and Visible Analyzer (CIVA) imaging system. The first (above) shows the comet’s irregular and jagged surface, with one of Philae’s legs photobombing the bottom left corner. The second(below) is a panoramic image, showing us a 360o view around the final landing site.

"The images bring with them both good and bad news. The fact that we have received data means that Philae and its mothership, Rosetta, are communicating again after theconnection was lost on Thursday. Philae does not send information back to Earth directly, but uses Rosetta as a middleman to relay the signals to us. So, Philae seems to be stable at the moment, which is good.

"Unfortunately, however, the images sent back have raised concerns. Scientists can’t tell whether the leg that’s poking out in the corner of the image is touching the surface of the comet, but what is clear is that Philae is not on a flat surface and could even be stuck in a pit. “We’re either looking into a ditch or we are against a wall,” said ESA scientist Matt Taylor.

"Although cheers were exchanged as Philae landed on the comet after a nail-biting seven hour descent, it soon became apparent that the robot’s arrival had not quite gone to plan. Magnetic field data from one of Philae’s onboard instruments revealed that the robot actually made three different landings. After contacting the comet’s surface just three minutes after the expected arrival time, the anchoring harpoons failed to deploy and the probe rebounded. Because the gravity on the comet is extremely weak, it took two hours and one more bounce for the robot to finally settle.

"The ESA team believes that Philae is now likely somewhere along the edge of the crater pictured below, and may be on its side. This is bad news because the cliff edge is blocking sunlight from reaching the probe, which only has 60 hours of primary battery life. When this runs out, the robot must rely on solar energy to recharge the battery systems. But instead of receiving the expected 6-7 hours of sunlight, it’s only getting around 1.5 hours of illumination during every 12-hour rotation of the comet, meaning that the mission could be over tomorrow.

"The ESA has therefore decided to activate a drill and hammer aboard the probe in an attempt to adjust its position into sunlight, but it could end up toppling the craft and making the situation worse. The ESA does have other options, however, such as attempting to re-fire the harpoons or moving the landing legs. If Philae doesn’t make it, the mission has still made history, and several days of data would have been collected, which is a remarkable achievement."

The lander has ceased to operate as of yesterday/today.

Philae Lander Runs Out Of Battery And Enters Deep Sleep

TEXT: "It’s been a tense week for space exploration, to say the least. But after a nail biting few days that kept millions around the world on the edge of their seats, with fingers and toes tightly crossed, the ESA has announced that the Philae lander has gone to sleep."

It seems possible that Philae might wake up again, though, as it and the comet get nearer to the Sun.

"While Philae’s future is uncertain, the Rosetta mission is still going strong and the pair will rendezvous over the coming months as 67P/C-G creeps towards the Sun. The data gathered by the orbiter will allow scientists to observe both short- and long-term changes that take place on the comet, which will hopefully provide us with a unique insight into the history of our Solar System."

Does that mean the Rosetta craft is continuing to orbit the comet or that it will be (or is) set to re-approach the comet at some time in the future?

Seems the internet is abuzz with this......another tangled web......to decipher what's the what........

Philae comet lander alien ‘cover-up’ conspiracy theories emerge

Probe landing attracts allegations that 67P is not a comet but alien object kept secret by Nasa and European Space Agency
LINK: Philae comet lander alien ‘cover-up’ conspiracy theories emerge | Science | The Guardian

TEXT: "As with everything from the moon landing to the death of Elvis, an alternative version of “what really happened” as the Philae probe landed on comet 67P did not take long to emerge.

"According to an email published on the website UFOSightingsDaily.com – which does a regular trade in alien sightings – this mission is part of a European Space Agency and Nasa cover-up to disguise the comet’s true alien nature. The email, allegedly from a secret whistle-blowing employee of the ESA, accuses the agency of “blatant cover-ups” in wanting to land on the speeding comet and attaches photos which claim to reveal the “true inner workings of Comet 67P”.

"It states: “Do not think for ONE MOMENT that a space agency would suddenly decide to spend billions of dollars to build and send a spacecraft on a 12-year journey to simply take some close-up images of a randomly picked out comet floating in space.”

" “Comet 67P is NOT a comet,” the letter continues. “Some 20 years ago Nasabegan detecting radio bursts from an unknown origin out in space. It would later be known that these had likely come from the direction of the now named comet 67P. It does show signs on its outside of machine like parts and unnatural terrain.”

"Ending on an ominous note, it adds: “Whatever this object is, it did not ask to be found or scrutinised.”

"Commenting on the article, contributor Scott Waring also said he believed the signals being emitted from the comet were a “greeting” to humans. “If it was a warning, they would not allow the ESA craft to have landed” he wrote. “I believe the landing of the ESA craft was the equivalent of a first handshake. They will make another move soon probably. Alien structures are on the comet. I don’t believe it’s natural. ”

"Yet this is far from the only extra-terrestrial conspiracy theory put forward about 67P and the ESA mission. In September, BPEarthWatch published a video showing “brand new, hi-res” images. Taken from the Rosetta spacecraft, they appeared to show two UFOs flying over the comet and a transmission tower-like structure built on the surface, potentially emitting the mysterious radio signals which have been picked by the ESA. “These images are not normal,” says the video voiceover.

"ESA’s confirmation that the comet had been emitting a “mystery song” has fuelled theories that it is in fact an alien ship and the warbling is an extra-terrestrial attempt at communication.

"Writing on the website UFOSightingsDaily.com, Scott Waring professed that: “In my opinion this is not a code. It is how a species of aliens communicate to one another without speaking. A form of telepathy put into primitive radio signals. Its the only way this species can communicate to us. This is their thoughts. They don’t talk.”

Waring added: “Getting a copy of the full message and then translating it should be of utter importance. Is it a message of greetings? Or is it a warning of what’s to come? We, the people of the world, need to find out.” "

:D

Makes sense to me, I'm guessing the termination of the mission has to do with a disagreement over landing rights and/or fees.
