Why It's Important for You to Donate to The Paracast: Although ads help cover a small part of our expenses, the income they produce is never enough to pay your humble hosts decent wages. Also, we do not receive any revenue from the ads placed on the show by our network or local stations. So we hope you're able to help fill the gap, if you can, to help us cover increasing server costs and other expenses -- or perhaps provide a little extra cash for lunch and utility bills. No contribution is too small (or too large :). It’s easy to send a donation. We have a Donate link on our home page, below the logo and audio player. Or use the Donate link on our forums, at the bottom of the sidebar on the right. You can also send your PayPal donation direct to sales (at) theparacast (dot) com.

Set Up: The Paracast is a paranormal radio show that takes you on a journey to a world beyond science, where UFOs, poltergeists and strange phenomena of all kinds have been reported by millions. The Paracast seeks to shed light on the mysteries and complexities of our Universe and the secrets that surround us in our everyday lives.

Join long-time paranormal researcher Gene Steinberg, co-host and acclaimed field investigator Christopher O'Brien, and a panel of special guest experts and experiencers, as they explore the realms of the known and unknown. Listen each week to the great stories of the history of the paranormal field in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This Week's Episode: Gene and Chris present James Carrion, a former Director of MUFON and author of a new book about what is called "The Greatest Deception in History." "The Rosetta Deception" is a fascinating piece of detective work explaining how "a master group of magicians" found ways to, among other things, unearth Soviet spies in the U.S. But it doesn't stop there. What about the early UFO cases, such as the Ghost Rockets, and were they real events, or the products of a carefully crafted program of deception and disinformation? And do such activities continue to the present day, and how do they impact research into UFOs?

Getting a Handle on Government UFO Deception
By Gene Steinberg

It is always interesting to wonder how things might have turned out if certain events hadn’t occurred. So there is a fascinating book by producer Bryce Zabel, “Surrounded by Enemies: What if Kennedy Survived Dallas?” The subject matter is crystal clear from the title. Significant events were set in motion after JFK’s death, and the outcomes would have been quite different if Johnson had never been president. The Viet Nam war might, for example, have never reached the intensity it did with someone else occupying the White House. And you wonder about the fate of the Voting Rights Act and even Medicare.

Consider, also, what might have happened if Beatle John Lennon hadn’t been cut down by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980. What if George Harrison hadn’t died of lung cancer in 2001? With successful solo careers, would the Fab Four have reunited from time to time for special events or the occasional tour?

And, as I’ve asked in recent months, what if Kenneth Arnold hadn’t sighted flying saucers over Mount Rainier in 1947? What if there was no Maury Island affair, or even a Roswell crash? But it was Arnold’s experience that helped fuel a worldwide phenomenon that encouraged people to look to the skies for evidence of an amazing mystery.

It doesn’t mean there would have been no UFO sightings. Indeed, strange things were seen in the skies long before Arnold got involved, but they hadn’t received such concentrated attention in the press.

Now according to former MUFON head James Carrion, author of a fascinating new book, “The Rosetta Deception,” government operatives in the U.S. and UK fed stories to the press about amazing inventions in weaponry that surely freaked the Soviet Union in the early days of the Cold War. And what about those Ghost Rockets that many believe to be part of the UFO phenomenon?

What if the Ghost Rockets, the Arnold sighting, the infamous Maury Island affair, and perhaps even Roswell, were all staged by a band of master manipulators to smoke out Soviet spies and mislead the leaders in their mother country about the state of Anglo-American technology in the days after World War II?

Indeed, just how many key UFO events weren’t unknown objects after all, but faked by government operatives to serve various national interests related to the Cold War and other matters? Is it at all possible such disinformation campaigns are still in force after 70 years?

Now Carrion’s book essentially ends after the Ghost Rocket sightings, but his follow-up book will focus clearly and directly on Roswell.

Ahead of Carrion’s appearance on The Paracast to discuss his book, I should point out that he’s not a UFO debunker. He isn’t dismissing the possibility of flying ships of unknown origin, or even UFO abductions for that matter, though it’s possible at least some early UFO kidnappings were staged by our own government as part of their mind control experiments.

A so-called UFO Earth Theory isn’t unique to Carrion. As some of you might know, my late friend Jim Moseley propounded just such an idea in the 1950s, before he moved to what he sometimes called a three-and-a-half-D hypothesis in the 1960s. Now it’s also true that Jim and his pal Gray Barker were engaged in fake feuds on those early days, and Barker, in turn, would occasionally suggest that Jim was a government agent.

Indeed, that suggestion seemed to have some credence since Jim was the son of Major General George Van Horn Moseley, who famously served for a time as Deputy Chief of Staff to General Douglas MacArthur in the years before World War II. Now to all intents and purposes, Jim was the opposite of his dad in almost every respect. During our long talkfests in the late 1960s, Jim showed me letters from his father to his mother that clearly indicated that Jim was not his favorite son. His rebellious behavior made him seem the opposite of what you’d expect a government agent to be which, of course, made him appear to be an ideal candidate.

Now I never actually believed Jim to be a government disinformation agent, though I suppose anything is possible.

In the days after Saucer News morphed into Saucer Smear, the self-described “court jester” of the field continued to poke fun at one and all, yet otherwise took a remarkably balanced approach to the subject. If he had government connections, he sure fooled me.

However, the real point of it all is that there does seem to have been active government efforts at manipulation in the UFO field. Carrion appears to believe that the UFO field was the unexpected outgrowth of the original efforts at deception, and that the “Rosetta” operatives responsible for creating the myth in the first place merely leveraged worldwide interest in the subject to advance their ongoing agendas.

Maybe.

I suppose there are lots of possibilities to explain the presence of government operatives in UFO research, not to mention their fellow travelers, such as former UFO researcher Bill Moore, a key figure in the early research into the Roswell crash. In 1989, Moore revealed his intelligence connections at a MUFON conference in Las Vegas. That destroyed his UFO career once and for all, but people still believe in some of the evidence he presented, such as the MJ-12 documents that allegedly confirmed the existence of a group within the government that kept tabs on Roswell and other UFO-related events.

And then there’s the case of Rear Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter, first director of the CIA, a possible participant in the “Rosetta Deception,” and once a member of the board of governors of Major Donald Keyhoe’s UFO organization, NICAP. Hillenkoetter was a friend and also Keyhoe’s classmate at the Naval Academy, which may one reason he joined NICAP, but that may only be a small part of the story.

Coincidence? Evidence that NICAP was up to no good? Indeed, was Hillenkoetter still working for the government and manipulating events in UFO research after his retirement from the military?

Theories all. Besides, there have been thousands upon thousands of UFO sightings around the world that would seem to disprove the contention that most of it was due to master manipulators from the government. But the presence of genuine sightings might also allow intelligence operatives to do their thing in plain sight yet remain undiscovered.

Or something like that.
